†Rogelio Zelada (1944-2023) was born in Cuba and spent many years teaching and ministering in the Archdiocese of Miami. He is known for writing one of the most popular compositions of the Cuban Church: “Virgen Mambisa.” Zelada was a member of the U.S. bishops’ Subcommittee on Divine Worship in Spanish and the executive board of the Instituto Nacional Hispano de Liturgia, Inc. He was a professor at The Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and at St. John Vianney Seminary in Miami, and he worked for many years in the Office of Worship before serving as the associate director for Hispanic formation in the Archdiocese of Miami. Pope Benedict XVI awarded him the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal for his long and exceptional service to the Catholic Church.
