†Eleazar Cortés (1947-2018) was one of the best-known composers of Spanish-language liturgical music in the United States. Born in Michoacán, Mexico, he worked as a music teacher at Don Bosco Catholic School in Watsonville, California, the University of California, Santa Cruz, and elsewhere. He was director of music at the historic Old Mission in San Juan Bautista, California, and at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Watsonville. Some of his popular compositions include “Oh Dios, Crea en Mi,” “Tu Cuerpo Y Sangre, Señor” and “Somos Una Iglesia.” A versatile artist, Cortés also composed music for musicals, movies, television, orchestras, mariachi and folk groups.
